Why does my car not start when its cold out? read please.?
Ok, so my car is an automatic 97 v6 ford mustang. The problem it has been giving me is it will not start primarilly when its cold out in the morning and the night time. When i try to start it all it does it sounds like it is normally about to start up but it just will not fire up. I can smell the gas comming out of the exhaust as well as seeing smoke from the exhause while i hold the key down as if i was turning it on. I thought maybe the gas lines were freezing because it was winter but i went out and bought some iso-heet to break down all the ice and whatnot but it did not help. Also when i put the car in reverse and drop it into drive it will drop to about 500RPMS and turn off on me, it also sounds like its going to stall on me when im going from a dead stop like a red light or a stop sign unless i hold the gas down while on the brakes, when i push the gas it just sounds like no gas is going and its about to turn off. The problem is not my battery because even with a jump from another car it wont even turn on. i brought it to pepboys a while ago to get new brakes and calipers and because my engine light came on and it said my radiator coolant temp sensor was bad even though i just replaced it. Could the temp sensor be causing my car to keep stalling and not starting up in the winter? The engine only has about 60,000 miles on it and i just did an oil change with 5W-30 oil. Does anyone know what could be causing this? My car sometimes will fire rite up, but 90% of the time it just wont start up. Any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks.

It sounds like you have a carburetor problem. Especially if you can smell gas while you crank it. It sounds like your idle adjustment is bad, or there is dirt in your idle jets, or your float level is off, resulting in a really rich mixture. I don’t know if I would take it to Pep Boys, but I would take it to a local garage that has a machine for adjusting carbs by measuring the exhaust gases. They can analyze what’s going on, and then repair it.
One final thought: Does it run OK when it’s warmed up? If so, you probably have a stuck choke in the "OFF" position. The choke closes when the car is cold, and keeps the engine running with a rich mixture. After the engine warms up, the choke goes open and you are back to just the carb directing your engine operation. However, if the choke stays open and you try and start the car, it will be about like you describe, very hard to start when cold. So you might have them check the choke setting and adjust it if necessary. This shouldn’t cost too much either. Good luck!

depending on the fuel sestem you may have a injection problem whare the warm up injection isnt working quite wrightand caseing your car to falul out the plugs and a wet plug dont fire so you may whant to take it into your mech and have your injection sestem checked out and seeing how you can smell gas this can reinfors my trane of thought that one or more of your injectors are in fact not working the way thay should thus a problem with starting in cold wether and at night as wellas summer comes the problem will seam to go away to you but dont let it full you for its just becase it is warmer in temp and if its not the problem it may also be a fuel reail presser that isnt corect or you may have washed the cyelinder wals with gas and have a loss of compression and once more no fire good luck with your problem but it will not fix its salfe

Well first, if your Check engine light is on (correct term is Malfunction Indicator Lamp, now. or MIL) make sure the sensor has a good connection if you know where it is. This could be part of your problem. And you’re probably seeing steam, not smoke from the tail pipe. Gas has a freezing point well below 0F and coolant (AKA antifreeze, oddly enough) much lower than that. As for the idle dropping, that means the fuel/air mixture is too rich (too much gas) and you’re losing air somewhere between the Intake Air Sensor and the cylinder, and the car doesn’t know about that so it cant compensate for it. This affects emissions and in turn could cause the MIL to come on. No the sensor unplugged or not working at all wont stop a car from starting because cars start in "open loop" where the car doesn’t rely on the sensors since its not at running temperature. The car goes into Closed Loop about 15-20 seconds after the car starts, even if your car shut off and you turned it back on. Basically what it does is guesses for that short amount of time and thats 90% of your emissions/pollution for that particular trip. It is possible for the air to be too cold. If you have a cold air intake, its not always the best thing.

I know this didn’t include a direct solution to your issue but I’m sure it helped. Hope it runs good soon.

I am assuming it cranks OK. I suspect the idle air control (IAC) solenoid is sticking. This is very common on the Fords and it happens more in cold weather.

I want you to try this the next time you suspect it will crank, but won’t start. Hold the throttle at about 5 or 10% while cranking. If it starts, but dies as soon as you release the throttle, I want you to try the next step. With an assistant, open the hood, locate the IAC solenoid. Crank the car while the assistant taps the IAC, it should start and operate normally. If it does, replace the IAC solenoid with a genuine Ford Motorcraft part. On most Fords, this is a very easy part to replace.
